This PR fixe the leftovers in locking improvements from past commit 085f278.
This PR is a cherry pick of commits from PR #424 from @MitchBradley where the behavior changes regarding how the library work with regards to client cleanup was not picked but left intact.
This PR can then be merged as a fix PR and PR #424 will focus on the behavior change with regards to how clients are cleaned up.
