Already existing repositories can be transferred into the OpenWorm GitHub organization via the ["transfer" mechanism provided by GitHub](https://help.github.com/articles/how-to-transfer-a-repository). Contributing to Design Document Implementation
-----------------------------------------------

**[Design Documents](../design_documents/) specify what to build.** GitHub issues (generated from DD Integration Contracts) specify the work breakdown.

### DD Contribution Workflow

1. **Browse [Design Documents](../design_documents/)** — find a DD matching your interest (neural modeling -> DD002, visualization -> DD012, etc.)
2. **Read the DD** — understand the goal, deliverables, and quality criteria
3. **Read "How to Build & Test" section** — copy-pasteable commands to get started
4. **Check for GitHub issues** labeled `dd###` (e.g., `dd005` for DD005)
5. **Claim an issue** — comment: "I'll work on this, ETA: X days"
6. **Implement according to DD spec** — Quality Criteria define acceptance
7. **Run tests:** `docker compose run quick-test` (per-PR), `docker compose run validate` (pre-merge)
8. **Open PR** referencing the DD and issue
9. **[Mind-of-a-Worm](ai_agents.md#mind-of-a-worm-active-contributor-guide) pre-review** — AI checks DD compliance automatically
10. **Human L3+ review** — Final approval gate

### Contributor Levels

OpenWorm is evolving toward a structured L0–L5 contributor ladder. See **[Contributor Progression Model](../contributing/contributor-progression.md)** for the full table and progression criteria.

Licenses on repositories
------------------------

In historical practice, OpenWorm members have chosen to use the [MIT open source license](http://opensource.org/licenses/MIT) for their repositories. The ultimate choice of license is up to the the authors of a given repository, but we would ask that all OpenWorm repository authors [choose some open source license for your repository](http://choosealicense.com/) and display a LICENSE file in the root of the repository to make it clear how to use it.

Relationship to the L0–L5 contributor model
-------------------------------------------

This page describes OpenWorm's **historical, currently-operational** membership model: anyone with at least one meaningful contribution is a Contributor; sustained activity for 3+ months earns Core Member status.

OpenWorm is evolving toward a more granular [L0–L5 contributor framework](../contributing/contributor-progression.md) with explicit progression criteria and subsystem ownership. Rough mapping between the two models:

| Historical term | Approximate L0–L5 equivalent |
|---|---|
| (interested observer, no PRs yet) | L0 Observer |
| Contributor (one meaningful contribution) | L1 Apprentice / L2 Junior Contributor |
| Core Member (3+ months regular contribution, attends hangouts) | L3 Contributor / L4 Senior Contributor |
| (steering, sets project direction) | L5 Founder |

The historical Contributor / Core Member terms remain valid; the L0–L5 framework adds finer-grained levels and explicit advancement criteria as the project scales.

DevoWorm's developmental dynamics work connects to several aspects of the OpenWorm simulation:

- **[Phase 8: Developmental Modeling](../design_documents/DD_PHASE_ROADMAP.md#phase-8-developmental-modeling)** — DevoWorm is the primary existing project for Phase 8 ("Worm That Grows"), which targets multi-stage simulation from L1 larva to adult

!!! note "Future Visualization"
The next-generation visualization is specified by DD012: Dynamic Visualization Architecture, which plans a Trame-based viewer evolving toward **WormSim 2.0** — a public Three.js + WebGPU site at wormsim.openworm.org. The WormBrowser at browser.openworm.org will continue to be maintained until WormSim 2.0 achieves full feature parity (see DD012 deployment timeline).

c302 modelling framework for C. elegans
==========================
c302: Multi-Scale Neural Modeling Framework
===========================================

c302 is a framework for generating network models in NeuroML 2 based on _C. elegans_ connectivity data. It is primarily intended as a way to generate neuronal networks at multiple levels of detail for the OpenWorm project.
c302 is OpenWorm's neural circuit modeling framework, implementing **DD002 (Neural Circuit Architecture)** and serving as the foundation for DD005-DD009, DD014-DD015.

## What It Does

Generates NeuroML2 networks at multiple levels of biophysical detail:

| Level | Cell Type | Synapses | Use Case | DD Reference |
|-------|-----------|----------|----------|--------------|
| A | Integrate-and-Fire | Event-driven | Topology testing only | DD002 (Level A) |
| B | IAF + Activity | Event-driven | Community extensions | DD002 (Level B) |
| C | HH conductance-based | Event-driven | Default working | DD002 (Level C) |
| **C1** | **HH + graded synapses** | **Graded** | **Recommended** (Sibernetic coupling) | DD002 (Level C1) |
| D | Multicompartmental HH | Event-driven | Specialized studies | DD002 (Level D) |

**Level C1 is the default** — graded synapses match _C. elegans_ biology (no action potentials) and enable coupling with Sibernetic body physics.

## Current Status (Phase 0)

**Accepted and working:**

- 302-neuron network generation from [Cook2019](https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1352-7) connectome (DD016)
- Multi-level framework (Levels A-D) with HH channels
- Validated against Schafer lab kinematics (DD010 Tier 3)

## Roadmap

**Phase 3 (DD005):** Cell-type specialization

- Generate 128 distinct `.cell.nml` files (one per CeNGEN neuron class)
- Calibrate conductances from expression-to-electrophysiology regression
- Validate: Functional connectivity improves 20%+ vs. generic model

**Phase 4 (DD006):** Neuropeptide modulation

- Add 31,479 peptide-receptor interactions ([Ripoll-Sanchez 2023](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuron.2023.09.043))
- GPCR-mediated conductance modulation (seconds timescale)

**Phase 5 (DD007, DD009, DD014):** Organ circuits

- Pharyngeal network (20 neurons + 20 muscles, 3-4 Hz pumping)
- Intestinal network (20 cells with IP3R oscillator, 50s defecation)
- Egg-laying network (2 HSN + 6 VC + 16 sex muscles, two-state pattern)
