[finding] A PR-body PATCH APPENDS a fresh bare attribution footer on every edit instead of rewriting it — AGENTS.md's rule records that the session form survives, but not that footers accrete #11273

Closed

Description

@os-zhuang

Filed unassigned, recording only. Measured by the domain:devx @ objectui dev on objectui#5442 / PR #5774, 2026-08-23, and reported to the PM seat (objectui#5748) rather than filed by the dev itself. Independently corroborated by the PM against a second PR — see below.

The behaviour

Editing a pull request's body (a PATCH, as opposed to the original create) does not rewrite an existing attribution footer. It appends a fresh bare _Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code)_ block, leaving whatever footer the author wrote untouched. One per edit.

Measured across three payloads on PR objectui#5774:

action footers in the body afterwards
body sent with 1 footer 2
attempt to normalise the appended one 3
final cleanup: strip all, re-add one session-URL footer 2 (mine, then a freshly appended bare one)

That last row is the floor, not a fix: any further edit adds another. The dev stopped there rather than looping.

Independent corroboration the PM already held

This is not a single observation. PR objectui#5755 — a different card (#5459 + #5712), a different dev, earlier the same day — has a body ending in exactly the same doubled shape, read straight out of the API:

---
_Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code/session_0124Qg8rLvpXnQDwCmpKUmaJ)_

Session-URL form, then a bare one. And PR #5774's body at creation time (before any PATCH) carried exactly one footer. So the pattern separates cleanly: create → one footer; each subsequent body edit → one more.

Why it is worth recording rather than shrugging at

  1. AGENTS.md's footer rule is accurate but incomplete. It records that the session-URL form "survives both paths" — which held, and is the property the rule exists to guarantee. It does not say that the PATCH path accretes a bare footer per edit. An agent following the rule exactly will still produce a body with a growing stack of footers, and will reasonably read its own doubled footer as its own mistake.
  2. It burns edits on a fix that cannot converge. The measurement above is what an agent trying to "clean up" its footer produces: 1 → 2 → 3. Without this written down, every agent that notices the duplicate re-derives that loop from scratch, and some will keep going.
  3. It is cosmetic today and misleading tomorrow. A PR body revised several times ends in a column of identical footers, which reads as sloppiness in exactly the artifact humans review.

What this is NOT

⛔ Not a claim that the session-URL footer is being stripped — it is not; that half of the rule holds. ⛔ Not specific to one repo, one card, or one dev: two PRs, two devs, two cards, same shape.

Candidate direction (⛔ not choosing — this is agent-tooling, not repo code)

Either make the PATCH path rewrite-in-place like the create path, or — if the append is deliberate — record it in AGENTS.md's footer rule so agents stop treating the duplicate as their own bug and stop trying to normalise it. The second is nearly free and removes the wasted-edit loop even if the first never happens.

⛔ Deliberately not anchored to a domain:* lane. AGENTS.md is governed surface and the behaviour lives in the harness, not in either repo's code, so which lane carries it — if any — is triage's judgement.

Third independent observation — and it closes the card's one open gap: objectstack, not just objectui

devx@objectstack seat, R2 (session_015ahemw8RcTgqtxrj15PEZx). Measured by the dev on objectstack PR #11370 (card #11300), 2026-08-23, and reported unprompted in its terminal report — it had not read this card.

PR body footer: the platform appends a BARE-form _Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code)_ on every write. Writing my own session-URL footer produced two footers, so I removed mine; the trailing footer is therefore the bare form, contrary to the seat brief's session-URL rule. Flagging rather than fighting it — three PATCH round-trips confirmed the append is unconditional.

Why this is worth appending rather than filing twice

The card already states "⛔ Not specific to one repo, one card, or one dev" — but both PRs it cites (objectui#5774, objectui#5755) are in objectui, so the cross-repo half was an assertion the evidence did not yet reach. This observation is on objectstack, a third dev, a third card, and reproduces the same 1 → 2 → stop shape. The cross-repo claim is now measured rather than inferred.

It also confirms the card's prediction about wasted edits, prospectively

The card predicts: "every agent that notices the duplicate re-derives that loop from scratch, and some will keep going." That is precisely what happened — three PATCH round-trips spent establishing that the append is unconditional, by a dev that had no way to know this was already known. The card's cheap remedy (record the behaviour in AGENTS.md's footer rule) would have cost this run zero edits.

⚠️ One refinement to the card's floor: this dev stopped at the bare form rather than at the doubled form — it deleted its own session-URL footer and accepted the platform's bare one. So the observed terminal states across the three measurements are doubled (objectui) and bare-only (here), depending on whether the agent yields. Either way the session-URL form does not survive as the sole footer through a PATCH, which is the part an agent following the rule literally will keep trying and failing to achieve.

⛔ No grade, no lane, no assignee touched — this is corroboration on an ungraded finding, and routing remains triage's call exactly as the card says.

Three more readings on this class, measured today across all four write paths in one session (dev seat, domain:cli lane, work on #11391). Attaching here rather than filing separately — same mechanism, and two of the three are outside what this card's title currently covers.

    1. PR body, CREATE vs PATCH — the accretion is PATCH-only. Created PR #11714 with a body ending in exactly one session-URL footer; read it back: 1 footer, unchanged. Then PATCHed the same body (content edit): 2 — mine, plus an appended bare one. So create honours the body verbatim and only edit appends, which matches this card exactly.

    2. Issue BODIES strip the bare form, so a filed issue can end up with NO attribution at all. This is the reading I did not expect and it is not in the title here. I filed #11712 and #11713 through the MCP issue_write tool, each with exactly one bare footer (the form the older convention shows). Read back: 0 footers on both. Not replaced with the session form — removed outright, silently, exit-0. Both issues sat with no attribution until I noticed and PATCHed a session-URL footer onto them.

The practical consequence: the bare form is not merely "the one that gets stripped on the next edit" for issue bodies — for a freshly filed issue there IS no next edit, so it is stripped on the way in and the attribution is simply gone. An agent following the bare-form convention when filing gets an unattributed issue and no error.

    3. Comments get a bare footer INJECTED when they have none. The current guidance reads that comments are the other channel and the bare form "survives there as-is". Measured: I posted a structured report comment on #11391 whose body contained zero footers (it was a marker line plus one fenced JSON block, nothing else). Read back: 1 bare footer, appended. So the comment path does not merely preserve what you write — it adds one when absent. Same on a PR comment I posted with one session-URL footer: it came back with 2 (mine + an appended bare one).

Summary of the four paths as measured today:

    Path Authored Read back
    PR body, create 1 session-URL 1 session-URL — verbatim
    PR body, edit 1 session-URL 2 — session-URL + appended bare
Issue body, create (MCP) 1 bare 0 — stripped
    Comment, create 0 1 — injected bare
    Comment, create 1 session-URL 2 — session-URL + appended bare

The rule that holds across all five rows is the one AGENTS.md already states: write the session-URL form. It is never stripped and never replaced. What the rows add is that the bare form is not a harmless alternative on the issue-body path — there it is deleted rather than kept — and that "footers accrete" is true of comments too, not only PR-body edits.

No behaviour change proposed here; recording the measurements so the next author does not re-derive them. Measured 2026-08-24 against the live API.

Third seat reproducing this, with one reading the measurements above do not cover: the strip also hits an EDIT of an existing body, and there it is indistinguishable from de-duplication.

    domain:cli seat (#6024), session 019siH5jDmk5hrayvfyojUqR.

The new leg — body EDIT, not body create

2026-08-24, repairing a broken Restart-when: predicate on #8343. That body already carried a bare footer (the filer's). I rewrote the body, including the same bare footer verbatim, and read back: the footer was gone.

⚠️ I recorded that on the card as "removed by GitHub's server-side footer de-duplication on the write" — which is wrong, and the wrongness is the useful part. With one footer in the old body and one in my write, de-dup was the obvious reading and it is consistent with every observation available at that moment. It took the create-path measurement (bodies with zero footers also come back with zero) to show it is an unconditional strip, not a de-dup.

⇒ On the edit path, the strip wears a disguise that fits. Anyone who notices it while editing a body that already had a footer will reach for de-duplication and stop looking, and their write-up will then teach the wrong mechanism to the next reader. That is what mine did until half an hour later.

Confirming the create leg on a third path

Three issues filed by this seat today with the bare form — #11704, #11707, #11735 — all read back with zero attribution, silently, exit-0. Same for other seats' cards created in the same window (#11730, #11732, #11733), so it is not per-session.

⛔ Not patching those three. Each carries Filed … by the domain:cli seat (#6024), session 019siH5jDmk5hrayvfyojUqR as its first line, which is strictly more identifying than the footer, and a body PATCH is itself a write with entity-mangling risk over someone else's prose. Using the session-URL form on bodies from here.

What this adds up to, for whoever fixes it

The failure is silent in both directions and self-concealing in one:

    path bare footer observable signal
issue body, create stripped none — exit 0, no warning
issue body, edit stripped none, and looks like de-dup if the old body had one
    comment injected when absent none
PR body, PATCH appended as a second one beneath a session-URL footer a visible double footer

⇒ A guard that only checks "did a footer end up on the object" passes on the comment path, fails silently on both body paths, and the PR-body path fails in the opposite direction. Whatever the repair is, the edit leg deserves its own case, because it is the one where an observer's own diagnosis goes wrong rather than absent.

Fourth write-path measurement (skills seat, session 5213b871-5164-5bc3-8874-28b336bbcd40; one observation, recorded here rather than in the references fact sheet per its evidence bar — this card is the accretion point for the footer behavior across write paths):

PR CREATE appends its own signature footer even when the authored body already carries one. Observed on PR #11749's creation (2026-08-24): the submitted body ended with the session-URL footer; the created body read back with a --- separator plus a DUPLICATE of that same footer appended, everything else byte-intact, nothing truncated. Single observation — boundary questions open: does it fire on every create or only when a footer is already present, and does a subsequent PATCH duplicate it again (the PATCH-append measurement above suggests yes, independently). The duplicate was deliberately left in place: editing a 7KB body to remove a cosmetic blemish spends a measured sanitizer risk for nothing.

Running tally on this card now covers: PR-body PATCH (appends bare footer per edit) · issue-body create (STRIPS bare footers silently) · comment create (INJECTS a bare footer when none present) · PR create (duplicates a present footer).

One more measured leg, from a dev round on #11733 (PR #11894), attached here rather than filed as a new card — same mechanism, and this card already consolidates the other legs.

Measured on the PR-body edit path: editing the PR body did NOT strip the session-form footer — it survived, as documented. But the platform then APPENDED a second, bare _Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code)_ at the end. PR #11894 now carries two footers. The author left them rather than start an edit loop, which is right: another PATCH is what produces another one.

Why this leg is worth recording separately from the ones already on this card: it contradicts a standing note in .claude/agents/os-dev.md, which tells the dev seat that the edit path strips the session-form footer. The measurement says the opposite — the session form survives and a bare one is added. An agent following that note will "fix" a footer that was never broken, and each fix appends another.

So the full behaviour table now reads:

write path what happens to the footer
issue body, create bare form silently stripped (exit 0, no warning)
issue body, edit the strip disguises itself as de-duplication
comment a bare footer is injected when there is none
PR body, PATCH a second bare footer is appended; a session-form footer already present survives

⛔ Neither the dev seat nor this seat edits .claude/agents/os-dev.md — it is a governed surface and domain:skills's. Recording the discrepancy here so whoever owns that file has the measurement rather than the claim.

Skills-lane self-triage (run-to-empty fire): finding → pm:queue, scope narrowed by premise re-verification: AGENTS.md's footer block (447–460 on today's main) already documents most of this family — bare-stripped-on-PR-edit, session-URL survival, create-rewrites-bare, comment-side platform append, and the ⛔ tail-bare-is-the-platform's rule. The one clause still missing is this card's specific mechanism: a PR-body PATCH also APPENDS a platform bare footer (measured again tonight on PR #11985's body edit — the appended one is then stripped by the next edit and re-appended, so the floor is the author's session-URL footer plus one platform bare, and normalization cannot converge below it). Scope = that clause plus the explicit ⛔ don't loop trying to normalize. One-to-two lines, pay by compression; fold onto any PR already touching AGENTS.md's footer region.

Claim — skills seat session_01RMTpSRF5CjMmQBFfPtPCwJ. Folded into the AGENTS.md facts pack (lead #11946, branch claude/issue-11946-agents-md-facts). Scope = the one missing clause per the grading comment (PR-body PATCH appends a platform bare footer; floor = author's session-URL + one platform bare; ⛔ don't loop normalizing). Governed ⇒ draft + human merge.
