Denis Matakov

CTO at Buenos Padel — a network of padel clubs in Moscow, Tver and beyond. In IT since 2006 — 20 years, most of them spent turning engineering teams into something the business can rely on.

I work at the seam between architecture and organization: the system design that makes a product scale, and the team design that makes the system get built. Lately a lot of that involves AI-assisted development — not as a demo, but as part of how the work actually gets done.

What I do

Engineering leadership. Building teams, competency centers and technical roadmaps. Making the decision-making process explicit so that architecture survives people changing jobs.

Architecture. Distributed systems and microservices platforms, cloud-native infrastructure, API design (REST/GraphQL), PostgreSQL data models. TOGAF 10 for the enterprise-scale conversations.

Making it measurable. Technical metrics, reliability targets, cost control. Kubernetes resource optimization and cloud spend reduction are recurring themes — the kind of work where a good week pays for the quarter.

Rapid prototyping. A working prototype in 1–7 days beats a deck every time. Python, Django, HTMX, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, plus whatever the problem actually needs.

Mentoring. Career and technical mentoring for engineers and tech leads — see mtkv.ru for how that works and what people say about it.

Selected results

  • Designed and led development of a microservices platform from architecture to production
  • Established six competency centers and an architectural manifesto that made technical decisions repeatable rather than heroic
  • Introduced a technical metrics system that measurably improved product reliability
  • Optimized Kubernetes cluster resources with significant infrastructure savings
  • Orchestrated a transition to a cloud SaaS architecture
