Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the contribution guide with SSH signing instructions and a signed-commit policy, including guidance for people, interactive agents, apps, bots and workflows.
    • Clarified the use of squash merges and the consequences of unsigned commits and rebase merges.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide replaces GPG-signing references with SSH signing guidance. It adds requirements for signed commits, signing methods for different contributors, and squash-merging pull requests.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The local setup prerequisites now require an SSH signing key instead of a GPG signing key.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: The code-style guidance now specifies SSH signing for people instead of requiring all commits to be GPG-signed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Adds a signed-commit policy stating that default-branch commits must be signed and unsigned pushes are refused. People and interactive agents use a GitHub-registered SSH signing key with specified Git settings and a verified committer email; apps, bots and workflows use the API or the estate action rather than pushing local commits. PRs must be squash-merged because unsigned commits on the PR branch block merging; unsigned branches must be recreated with signed commits, and rebase-merge is disabled.

site:docs.github.com commit signature verification SSH signing key verified email gpg.format user.signingkey

💡 Result:

GitHub’s docs confirm:

- For **SSH commit signing**, configure Git with:
  ```sh
  git config --global gpg.format ssh
  git config --global user.signingkey /PATH/TO/KEY.PUB
  ```
  SSH signature verification requires Git 2.34 or later. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/telling-git-about-your-signing-key?platform=mac&s=09&utm_source=openai))
- GitHub marks a commit **Verified** when its GPG, SSH, or S/MIME signature can be cryptographically verified. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit-signature-verification/about-commit-signature-verification?utm_source=openai))
- The **verified-email matching requirement** in the docs applies to GPG keys: GitHub checks that the committer or tagger email matches an identity on the GPG key and is verified on the account. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/troubleshooting-commit-signature-verification/using-a-verified-email-address-in-your-gpg-key?ref=andrew-matveychuk&utm_source=openai))

So, `gpg.format` and `user.signingkey` are relevant to selecting an SSH signing key, while the cited verified-email rule is specifically about GPG.

Document the minimum Git version for SSH signing.

GitHub requires Git 2.34 or later for SSH commit signing. The guide does not state this requirement. A contributor using an older Git version can follow the listed settings but fail to create an SSH-signed commit. The ruleset can then reject the push as unsigned.
