Hardens the overhead benchmark (warmup, repeated runs, medians), adds a time-compression benchmark, records the measured numbers in benchmarks/README.md, and adds docs/design.md covering the architecture and the decisions behind it. The main README gains a performance summary and a link to the design notes.
