test(dynamodb): prove protect-dynamodb 6.0.1 items read and query under Stack 1.x - #1436
Turns the claims in our Protect.js → Stack 1.x DynamoDB migration write-up into tests.
Until now, every v2 test minted its "v2" fixtures with today's protect-ffi running in v2 mode. Compatibility with ciphertext written by the old native client (protect-ffi 0.18.1 / cipherstash-client 0.28) was argued from source, and no test pinned it.
Credentialed e2e: e2e/tests/protect-dynamodb-compat.e2e.test.ts (32 tests, green against live ZeroKMS)
This suite mints items with the real @cipherstash/protect@10.2.1 + @cipherstash/protect-dynamodb@6.0.1, added as exact-pinned devDependencies of the private @cipherstash/e2e package. It then reads them with the in-tree stack and checks:
Q1 decrypt: reads with storedEqlVersion: 2 and with no version, on both the single and bulk paths. Results agree with protect-dynamodb's own decrypt. A bigint column comes back as a JS bigint from Stack and a number from Protect, with the same value. Tampered ciphertext fails rather than returning wrong plaintext (with a control read, so a service failure can't pass the test).
Q2 __hmac:encryptQuery(...).hm equals the stored HMAC for TextEq, IntegerEq, BigintEq and DoubleEq, and it equals legacy createSearchTerms. Negative cases: IntegerOrd emits no hm, a v3 Boolean writes no __hmac, and a downcase filter only matches when the input is lowercased first.
Q3 binding: items decrypt under a renamed table and renamed DB column names, and the HMAC is bound to neither.
Rollback: an item written by Stack 1.x reads back through protect-dynamodb 6.0.1 and carries the same __hmac.
Acceptance: a customer-shaped run (legacy write, mixed partial update, backfill, query, rollback) on an in-memory table. It includes the stale __hmac that a Stack Boolean partial update must REMOVE.
Legacy dataType('json'): it is stored as a scalar string, encryptedDynamoDB + types.Json fails on it (the known gap), and client.decrypt() on a rebuilt v2 scalar envelope reads it and backfills to types.Json.
DEPRECATED, no longer required: Protect 10.2.1 → Stack 0.19 → Stack 1.x. A clearly marked block pins @cipherstash/stack@0.19.0. It shows that anyone who took the old intermediate hop lands in the same place: 0.19 re-writes the same __hmac values Protect wrote, and Stack 1.x reads and queries the result exactly as it does the Protect item. Delete it once no customer is on 0.19.
What protect 10.2.1 could actually write (found while building the fixture, now pinned):
A dataType('bigint') column takes only a JS number. A JS bigint throws Do not know how to serialize a BigInt, and a string is rejected. So no legacy bigint value exceeds Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER exactly.
A dataType('date') column rejects every form: ISO strings, Date, epoch numbers and objects all fail with Unsupported conversion … to Date. So no protect 10.2.1 item carries a date, and there is no legacy date HMAC to match.
Booleans encrypt fine.
Items are minted at test time rather than committed, because ciphertext and HMACs are bound to the keyset (the same trap as #1200). No DynamoDB is needed.
CI wiring (tests.yml, e2e-tests job)
The existing turbo run test:e2e step runs under turbo's strict env mode, which filters out the CS_* variables, so every credentialed e2e suite in that job has been skipping. The compat suite therefore fails rather than skips when credentials are missing. The default e2e/vitest.config.ts excludes it, and it runs from e2e/vitest.protect-compat.config.ts as a new test:protect-compat turbo task. A dedicated step in the job runs that task with --env-mode=loose, the convention the integration-*.yml workflows use.
cipherstash-client 0.28 doesn't derive its endpoints from the workspace CRN. The suite sets CS_CTS_HOST / CS_ZEROKMS_HOST from the CRN's region only while the Protect client is built, then restores them. The job's ap-southeast-2 host pins are removed, matching the other credentialed workflows.
I didn't switch the test:e2e step to --env-mode=loose. That un-skips prisma-example-readme.e2e.test.ts, which is broken on main (ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED ./control from stack-prisma) and is out of scope here.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds authenticated end-to-end tests for Protect and Stack DynamoDB compatibility. It adds Stack tests for legacy scalar JSON and renamed-property reads. CI removes fixed service-host overrides and runs the compatibility test with authentication required.
The E2E package adds Protect dependencies. The test loads credentials and defines schemas and helpers. CI removes fixed service-host settings and runs the test with authentication required.
Test legacy item creation and reads e2e/tests/protect-dynamodb-compat.e2e.test.ts, languages/typescript/packages/stack/__tests__/dynamodb/v2-type-coverage.test.ts
The compatibility suite checks legacy item fields, Stack and Protect reads, bulk reads, tampered ciphertext, and renamed mappings. Stack tests cover legacy scalar JSON failure and renamed-property pass-through.
Test HMAC mappings and migration paths e2e/tests/protect-dynamodb-compat.e2e.test.ts
The suite compares HMAC behavior across values and domains, checks downcase behavior and rollback reads, and exercises partial updates, backfill, mixed-generation reads and queries, and stale HMAC removal.
Test legacy JSON and Stack 0.19 bridge e2e/tests/protect-dynamodb-compat.e2e.test.ts
The suite tests legacy scalar JSON handling, re-encryption and readback, and the deprecated Stack 0.19 bridge.
This change adds compatibility tests and a CI step that exercise legacy protect-dynamodb items under Stack 1.x. It does not alter shipped runtime behavior. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Use a real DynamoDB path for the persistence assertion.
The test exercises the real encryptModel and decryptModel transformations, but the stale-Boolean assertion uses a Map for SET, REMOVE, and query behavior. It therefore does not cover DynamoDB update or query operations.
Move this scenario to a unit suite, or use real DynamoDB update and query operations in this e2e test. This is a test-coverage refactor, not a major product defect.

Approved. The suite proves the claim in the title. It mints the items at test time with the real @cipherstash/protect@10.2.1 and @cipherstash/protect-dynamodb@6.0.1 (protect-ffi 0.18.1), and it commits no ciphertext. The dedicated CI step runs all 32 tests with credentials, and CS_E2E_REQUIRE_AUTH=1 stops a silent skip.
The inline comments carry suggestions that you can commit with one click. The two items below are outside the diff, so I cannot attach suggestions to them.
1. Should-fix: the PR description
The supply-chain note lists four packages. The lockfile adds more, and the repo treats each new tarball as an audit decision. Proposed replacement:
New dev-only dependencies (@cipherstash/e2e, private, never published)
@rollup/rollup-linux-x64-gnu@4.24.0 (optional native package, from protect 10.2.1)
No package is added to onlyBuiltDependencies.
Also change "24 tests" to 32, and add one line about the deprecated Stack 0.19 bridge block.
2. Follow-up: skills/stash-dynamodb/SKILL.md
The tests pin six migration traps. The skill tells customers about none of them. This change does not need to be in this PR. It needs a stash patch changeset, because skills/ ships in the stash tarball. Proposed text, to go after the code block in "Reading Existing EQL v2 Items":
### Migrating from `@cipherstash/protect-dynamodb`
Items that `@cipherstash/protect-dynamodb` wrote read through the path above.
Keep the property keys and column names of the old `csTable`. Check these
points before you cut over:
-**Do not rename a property key.** Stack finds `<key>__source` by property
key. After a rename, `decryptModel` returns `{ data }` with the raw
`<oldKey>__source` ciphertext in it. It does not return a failure.
-**A `bigint` column decrypts to a JS `bigint`.**`protect-dynamodb` returned
a `number`. The value does not change.
-**v3 does not apply a v2 `downcase` filter.** To match a `__hmac` that a
`downcase` column wrote, lowercase the value before `encryptQuery` and before
`encryptModel`.
-**`types.Boolean` writes no `__hmac`.** After a backfill, a query on a legacy
Boolean `__hmac` finds nothing. A partial update that sets only
`<key>__source` keeps the old `__hmac`, so an equality query can find an item
whose value changed. REMOVE `<key>__hmac` in the same `UpdateItem`.
-**A numeric `*Ord` domain writes no `__hmac`.** To keep equality queries on a
legacy numeric column, use a `*Eq` domain.
-**A legacy `dataType('json')` column does not read through `decryptModel`
with `types.Json`.** Rebuild the v2 envelope, decrypt it with
`client.decrypt()`, then write the value back with `encryptModel`:
```typescriptconst result =awaitclient.decrypt({
v: 2,
k: 'ct',
i: { t: 'docs', c: 'profile' },
c: item.profile__source,
})
if (result.failure) thrownewError(result.failure.message)
const backfilled =awaitdynamo.encryptModel(
{ ...rest, profile: result.data },
docs,
)
```
Changeset:
---'stash': patch---
The `stash-dynamodb` skill now lists the traps to check when you migrate items that `@cipherstash/protect-dynamodb` wrote.
…rough
Offline coverage in the stack package for two Protect.js migration edges:
- A Protect dataType('json') column was stored as a scalar ciphertext. The
adapter drops it when read as types.Json, so the read fails. This pins the
known gap.
- A renamed property key makes decryptModel return the raw ciphertext inside
a successful { data } rather than failing.
…ack 1.x
Every existing v2 test mints its fixtures with today's protect-ffi in v2
mode, so compatibility with ciphertext written by the old native client
(protect-ffi 0.18.1 / cipherstash-client 0.28) was argued from source and
pinned by nothing.
This suite mints items with the real @cipherstash/protect 10.2.1 and
@cipherstash/protect-dynamodb 6.0.1 (exact-pinned devDependencies of the
private e2e package) and checks them against the in-tree Stack:
- decrypt with and without storedEqlVersion: 2, single and bulk, agreeing
with Protect (bigint comes back as a native bigint); tampered ciphertext
fails
- encryptQuery(...).hm equals the stored __hmac for TextEq, IntegerEq,
BigintEq and DoubleEq; IntegerOrd and Boolean carry none; downcase is left
to the application
- the HMAC is bound to neither the table nor the DB column name
- Stack-written items still read under Protect, for rollback
- a customer-shaped acceptance run (legacy write, mixed partial update,
backfill, query, rollback), including the stale __hmac a Boolean partial
update must REMOVE
- Protect's scalar dataType('json') values, readable via client.decrypt and
backfillable to types.Json
Items are minted at test time because ciphertext and HMACs are bound to the
keyset. cipherstash-client 0.28 does not derive service hosts from the CRN,
so CS_CTS_HOST / CS_ZEROKMS_HOST are pointed at the CRN's region only while
Protect's client is built.
The suite fails rather than skips without the four CS_* credentials, so the
default e2e config excludes it. It runs from vitest.protect-compat.config.ts
as the new test:protect-compat turbo task.
turbo's strict env mode filters CS_* out of `turbo run test:e2e`, so
credentialed e2e suites in this job skip. Run test:protect-compat in its own
step with --env-mode=loose, as the integration-*.yml workflows do.
Drop the job's ap-southeast-2 CS_ZEROKMS_HOST / CS_CTS_HOST pins: current
clients derive both from the CRN, and the suite scopes its own override to
Protect's client.
Earlier guidance routed Protect apps through @cipherstash/stack@0.19.0
before Stack 1.x. The direct path is now proven, so that hop is no longer
required. This DEPRECATED block shows that anyone who took it lands in the
same place: 0.19 re-writes the same __hmac values Protect wrote, and Stack
1.x reads and queries the result as it does the Protect item.
0.19.0 is pinned as the npm alias @cipherstash/stack-0.19. Delete the block
once no customer is on 0.19.
