🎯 Changes

Fixes #2712 by guarding the boundary reset cleanup so it only clears the reset flag after the boundary has actually been reset.

This keeps a pending reset from being cleared by an unrelated mount while queries are remounting, and preserves the normal one-time retry behavior after the boundary is reset.

Validation:

  • pnpm nx run @tanstack/react-query:test:lib -- --run src/__tests__/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx
  • pnpm nx run @tanstack/preact-query:test:lib -- --run src/__tests__/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Error boundaries in React Query and Preact Query now clear their reset state only after a reset has occurred. Each reset is consumed at most once, so repeated clear attempts won’t prematurely clear the state or affect later resets.

📝 Walkthrough

React Query and Preact Query now track error-boundary reset generations. Each generation is consumed at most once, and reset state is cleared only when the boundary is reset and the current generation differs from the last consumed generation.

Changes: Query error boundary reset

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track reset generations
packages/react-query/src/QueryErrorResetBoundary.tsx, packages/preact-query/src/QueryErrorResetBoundary.tsx
Both boundary implementations increment a reset count when reset runs. clearReset records the current generation and does nothing when that generation was already consumed.
Consume reset generations once
packages/react-query/src/errorBoundaryUtils.ts, packages/react-query/src/__tests__/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx, packages/preact-query/src/errorBoundaryUtils.ts, packages/preact-query/src/__tests__/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx, .changeset/fix-query-error-reset-boundary.md
Both hooks clear reset state only when isReset() is true and the current and consumed counts differ. Tests cover inactive boundaries and repeated clearing within one generation. The changeset marks both packages for patch releases.

The fix makes each reset clear only once, but an unrelated query that mounts first can still use up the reset. The failed query may then show its error again instead of retrying. The new tests do not cover that ordering. The original remount problem may persist, so this should be resolved before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not use this guard as the reset-state fix.

clearReset() still runs whenever isReset() is true. The native implementation only assigns isReset = false, so the old and new code have identical state transitions. An unrelated query mount can still consume a pending reset, and the reported remount failure remains unchanged. The added tests only cover isReset() === false; they do not cover the true → false transition or the end-to-end boundary flow. Tie reset cleanup to the actual boundary reset lifecycle instead of query mounting.

Updated the fix to track reset generations and only consume a pending reset once per boundary lifecycle. This prevents a later remount from clearing a still-pending error-boundary reset in both the React and Preact adapters. I also added focused regression tests covering the stale-reset scenario.

Validation:

  • pnpm --dir packages/react-query run test:lib -- --run src/tests/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx
  • pnpm --dir packages/preact-query run test:lib -- --run src/tests/QueryResetErrorBoundary.test.tsx

Results: both packages passed, with 584/584 and 541/541 tests green and no type errors.

Rebased this fix cleanly on the current upstream main by transplanting only the three scoped fix commits, eliminating the former merge conflicts and unrelated historical changes. Fresh validation on the rebuilt head 82870bc: React Query 586 tests passed (35 files), Preact Query 542 tests passed (34 files), both with no type errors; git diff --check passes. Marking ready for maintainer review.

Exercise the hooks instead of copied conditions. Both generation tests execute mock logic outside the production hooks. They can pass without detecting premature consumption. (github.com)

Do not let the first query mount consume a shared reset. A pending generation identifies a reset, but neither hook identifies the query that must retry. An unrelated query effect can clear the generation first, leaving the failed query unable to retry on remount. This is the ordering described in issue #2712. (github.com)
