👋 Jules, reporting for duty! I'm here to lend a hand with this pull request. When you start a review, I'll add a 👀 emoji to each comment to let you know I've read it. I'll focus on feedback directed at me and will do my best to stay out of conversations between you and other bots or reviewers to keep the noise down. I'll push a commit with your requested changes shortly after. Please note there might be a delay between these steps, but rest assured I'm on the job! For more direct control, you can switch me to Reactive Mode. When this mode is on, I will only act on comments where you specifically mention me with New to Jules? Learn more at jules.google/docs. For security, I will only act on instructions from the user who triggered this task. |

User description
💡 What: Replaced the
.char_indices().peekable()iterator innormalize_expressionwith direct byte-level iteration, falling back to full UTF-8 decoding only when encountering non-ASCII bytes.🎯 Why: In hot string parsing loops where the majority of characters are ASCII (like SQL expressions),
.char_indices()introduces noticeable performance overhead because it performs UTF-8 validation and decoding for every single character.📊 Impact: Reduces the parsing overhead for normal ASCII characters to simple byte casting and increments, completely skipping standard UTF-8 processing in the hot path. Operator peeking (
!=,==) now also uses zero-cost byte array lookups instead of iterator peaking.🔬 Measurement: Expected measurable reduction in time spent within
normalize_expressionfor large or repeated queries. You can verify the behavior hasn't changed by runningcargo test --workspace(which continues to pass) because multi-byte Unicode characters are still safely decoded when encountered.PR created automatically by Jules for task 18254843568297997185 started by @SayanthRock
