Open Tokenized Asset Standard (OTAS) — Whitepaper

This repository holds the OTAS community whitepaper, a draft exploring whether a small set of composable token primitives can serve as a convergence layer for post-trade clearing, settlement, and compliance across heterogeneous distributed ledgers.

OTAS is a lab under LF Decentralized Trust (LFDT).

Read the whitepaper

OTAS Whitepaper v0.1 (draft for review)

It surveys existing token standards (ERC-20/1400/3643, Sui Move, Solana Token-2022, Fabric/Panurus, the Token Taxonomy Framework), proposes a primitive/behavior/event model, and develops four layers — Settlement, Identity, Compliance, and Asset Metadata — plus a comparison of bank, financial-firm, and sovereign issuer archetypes.

This is a draft community whitepaper published for review and feedback. Its contents are subject to change and do not constitute legal, regulatory, financial, or investment advice. See the disclaimer in the whitepaper for details.

Join the discussion

The whitepaper deliberately ends with open questions rather than a finished specification. Each is being worked through in the Discussions tab under the Q&A category (look for the [Open Question] prefix). Weigh in, propose answers, or point us to prior art — this is the primary input to the next revision.

Contributing

OTAS is an open source LFDT effort and welcomes researchers, protocol developers, financial-markets practitioners, technical writers, and reviewers. Contributions require a signed Developer Certificate of Origin (DCO). Specification material is intended for the Community Specification License 1.0 and reference code for Apache 2.0.

To get involved: read the whitepaper, browse the open questions in Discussions, and jump into the ones in your area of expertise.
