Summary

Two fixes found while running the local Comfy agent end to end on a Windows 11 box (RTX 5090), where the agent drives comfy-cli for installs, model downloads, runs and builds.

1. Detached workers now break out of the parent Job Object (Windows). The local agent runs every comfy-cli invocation inside a kill-on-close Job Object. comfy model download --background, the comfy run watcher and the templates cache refresher detach with DETACHED_PROCESS | CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP, but the child stays a member of the parent's job. It was killed as soon as the command returned, so a background download stayed starting forever. The new comfy_cli/detach.py:popen_detached adds CREATE_BREAKAWAY_FROM_JOB. If the enclosing job forbids breakaway (ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED), it retries once without the flag, which is the old behaviour. POSIX is unchanged. The agent side (JOB_OBJECT_LIMIT_BREAKAWAY_OK on its job) is in Comfy-Org/cloud#9503.

2. comfy install into an existing non-git folder now reports an error envelope. It already exited 1, but in --json mode it printed no envelope. It now emits install_target_not_git_repo (or install_target_not_comfyui for a git repo with a foreign remote), with details.path and a hint to pick another --workspace or move the folder. Both codes are registered in error_codes.py.

3. A deploy submit that never reached the endpoint is no longer "the job may exist". When the local agent's egress proxy refused the deployment host (<dep-id>.stg.run.comfy.app), comfy deploy run reported deploy_job_submit_unknown and told the caller not to resubmit, though the CONNECT tunnel had been refused before any byte of the request was sent. A refused connection, a DNS failure, or a refused proxy tunnel now raises deploy_endpoint_unreachable, with details.host naming the endpoint: no job exists, so fix the path and submit again. Timeouts, and any failure after the request was sent, stay deploy_job_submit_unknown. The code is registered, and the comfy-deploy-failures skill table is updated.

Testing

  • New tests/comfy_cli/test_detach.py (8 tests): win32 passes the breakaway flag; OSError(winerror=5) and PermissionError retry without it; a second failure is raised; FileNotFoundError is not retried; POSIX is unchanged. The Windows flag assertions in the model-download and run-watcher spawn tests were updated.
  • New tests/comfy_cli/test_install_invalid_target.py (4 tests): each case exits 1 with the right error code, hint and details, and never clones or checks out.
  • tests/comfy_cli/test_deploy_jobs.py adds 3 cases (a proxy-refused tunnel, a refused connection, DNS), each giving deploy_endpoint_unreachable after a single attempt; the registry exact-set test now counts the new code.
  • Full suite: 7864 passed and 3 failed. The same 3 fail on aec5220c without these changes (version metadata 0.0.0, click wording in one usage-error case, one HTTP supplement test).
  • The Job Object behaviour was verified on real Windows from the agent side: a Go test puts a leader in a kill-on-close job with BREAKAWAY_OK, and only the child that requested CREATE_BREAKAWAY_FROM_JOB survives the job closing. This PR's Python code is covered by mocks.

The local Comfy agent runs every comfy-cli invocation inside a kill-on-close
Job Object. Children spawned with DETACHED_PROCESS | CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP
remain members of that job, so `comfy model download --background` workers,
the `comfy run` watcher and the templates cache refresher were killed as soon
as the command returned (a background download stuck at "starting").

Add comfy_cli.detach.popen_detached, which on Windows also passes
CREATE_BREAKAWAY_FROM_JOB and, if the enclosing job forbids breakaway
(ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED), retries once with the previous flags. POSIX keeps
start_new_session=True. Use it at all three detach sites.

…t a ComfyUI repo

`comfy --skip-prompt install --nvidia` into a pre-existing, non-git
workspace directory printed "'<path>' exists but is not a valid git
repository." and installed nothing, but emitted no JSON envelope (and older
releases exited 0), so an agent could not tell it failed.

Route the refusal through renderer.error with two new registered codes,
install_target_not_git_repo and install_target_not_comfyui (details.path,
details.remotes), a hint to choose another --workspace or remove/rename the
folder, and exit 1. A versioned install (--version X) now also rejects a
pre-existing non-git folder up front instead of attempting a checkout in it.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request validates existing comfy install targets, centralizes detached-process creation, and classifies deployment failures that occur before a request reaches the endpoint.

Changes

Install target validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Install validation contract
comfy_cli/command/install.py, comfy_cli/error_codes.py
Adds Git and ComfyUI target validation with structured errors, path details, remotes, and workspace guidance.
Install execution and regression coverage
comfy_cli/command/install.py, tests/comfy_cli/test_install_invalid_target.py, tests/comfy_cli/command/test_manager_gui.py, tests/comfy_cli/test_global_python_install.py, tests/comfy_cli/test_install_python_resolution.py
Validates preexisting targets before installation and updates repository-path test fixtures. Tests cover output, exit status, accepted repositories, and absence of installation side effects.

Detached process spawning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detached process helper and wiring
comfy_cli/detach.py, comfy_cli/command/models/models.py, comfy_cli/command/run/watcher.py, comfy_cli/command/templates.py
Centralizes POSIX and Windows process detachment. Windows retries without job breakaway after access-denied failures.
Detachment regression coverage
tests/comfy_cli/test_detach.py, tests/comfy_cli/command/test_model_download_background.py, tests/comfy_cli/command/test_run_watcher_spawn.py
Tests platform flags, fallback behavior, error propagation, POSIX session handling, and updated Windows expectations.

Deployment failure classification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deployment error contract
comfy_cli/error_codes.py, comfy_cli/skills/comfy-deploy-failures/SKILL.md, tests/comfy_cli/output/test_error_code_registry.py
Adds and registers deploy_endpoint_unreachable for failures that create no deployment job.
Deployment submission classification
comfy_cli/deploy_jobs.py, tests/comfy_cli/test_deploy_jobs.py
Classifies connection refusal, DNS failure, and proxy tunnel refusal as unreachable-endpoint errors. Other ambiguous transport failures retain unknown-outcome handling.

… may exist'

`comfy deploy run` from the local Comfy agent failed with
deploy_job_submit_unknown ("the job may exist ... do not resubmit") because the
agent's egress proxy refused the deployment host: the CONNECT tunnel was
refused before a byte of the request was sent. A refused connection, a DNS
failure or a refused proxy tunnel now raise deploy_endpoint_unreachable naming
the host (no job exists; fix the path and submit again). Timeouts and anything
after the request was sent stay deploy_job_submit_unknown.

…the install dir

- Strip URL userinfo from git remotes before they reach the
  install_target_not_comfyui message and details.remotes
  (https://user:tok@host/x -> https://***@host/x; scp-style git@host:x
  is left as is).
- check_comfy_repo walks up to a parent checkout, so a non-git
  <ComfyUI>/leftover passed install.execute's target check. Accept a
  target only when the resolved ComfyUI root is repo_dir itself;
  workspace detection keeps parent discovery.
- Test mocks of check_comfy_repo now return the real (True, repo_dir)
  shape instead of (True, None).

Validate an existing PR target before checkout.

With --pr, execute() calls handle_pr_checkout() before it validates the target. For an existing path, handle_pr_checkout() calls checkout_pr(), which can add a remote, fetch the PR branch, and check out a new branch. The later ComfyUI validation can then reject the target after the foreign repository has changed.

Compute whether the target exists and reject an existing non-ComfyUI target before handle_pr_checkout(). Keep the clone path for a missing target. Add a regression test that asserts checkout_pr() is not called for an existing foreign Git repository.
