Running out of memory comparing large folders by content #48

Description

@primary868

What happens?

If I try to compare two large folders (each has hundreds of files) by file contents, VisualDiffer will eventually use up all my system memory and crash, making me force quit all open applications. I've tried with only VisualDiffer open (no other apps running in the background) and the same thing happens. The "force quit" window says VisualDiffer is trying to use 48 GB of memory even though my laptop only has 16 GB.

What did you expect to happen?

I expect VisualDiffer to take longer to compare folders by file contents, but stay within the memory limits of my computer.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Pick two large folders to compare (dozens/hundreds of files)
  2. Goto "Session..." -> "Session Settings" -> Comparison -> "Compare file content only."
  3. Start Comparison.

Environment

M5 MacBook Air; 16GB memory; macOS 26.4
