Test more examples in CI and/or add more dedicated tests

#129 includes a new GitHub workflow to build and test (some of) the examples. We should test more of the examples, add dedicated tests, or both.

Also, the test script is currently a BASH script. It would be more in keeping with the Python theme to rewrite it in Python :)
