Feature: Support moving of tags and branches

Using SourceGit 2026.11 on Linux Mint 22.2, I find no means to move a branch or tag to refer to a different commit.

Since the need periodically arises, support from the application would be quite helpful.

To move a branch, you can do it one of the following ways:

• Select a revision in HISTORY and use Reset <CURRENT> to <REVISION> context menu of selected commit - Used for current branch only
• Select a revision in HISTORY and use Reset <BRANCH> to <REVSION> context menu of selected branch - Used for non-current branch only
• Create a new branch with the same of the target branch you want to move and Override existing branch enabled

SourceGit has no plan to support move a tag. And I do not think tags should be moved (it's not branch). If you want, you can just delete it and add a new one

I certainly feel that moving tags is legitimate, and is needed occasionally.

A tag intended to refer to the latest stable release is an example of a tag that should be moved at specific times.

Yes, it only moves the referenced revision of that branch

Two ways to do this

• Use branch instead of tag for tracking stable (tested) revisions.
• Use Semantic Tags such as v{Major}.{Minor}.{Build} and increase the Build or even Minor each time you want to publish a new temp release.

Either solution is appropriate in specific use cases, but the application should not constrain or anticipate which functionality is appropriate in universally.

Moving a tag is valid in relation to certain circumstances or preferences. Please consider adding the feature. I would not be opposed to a warning being issued about the potential problems caused by moving a tag.
