Conditional Statements in Java — DOUBT KILLER 🔥
This is your confusion-clearing version. We'll focus on the questions that usually cause mistakes in Java exams, interviews, and programs.
- First: What Is a Conditional Statement?
A conditional statement allows Java to make a decision.
if (condition) { // execute when condition is true }
A condition must produce a boolean result:
true or false
Example:
int age = 20;
if (age >= 18) { System.out.println("Adult"); }
Java evaluates:
20 >= 18 ↓ true ↓ execute if block
- How Many Conditional Statements Are There?
For the concepts you're learning, remember these five:
- if
- if-else
- else-if ladder
- nested if
- switch
- DOUBT: Can if Exist Without else?
YES ✅
if (age >= 18) { System.out.println("Adult"); }
If false, Java simply skips the block.
true → execute false → skip
- DOUBT: Can else Exist Without if?
NO ❌
This is invalid:
else { System.out.println("Hello"); }
else must be associated with an if.
- DOUBT: Is else Mandatory?
NO ❌
This is perfectly valid:
if (x > 10) { System.out.println("Greater"); }
else is optional.
- DOUBT: What Exactly Does if-else Mean?
It means:
If condition is true, execute if; otherwise execute else.
int x = 10;
if (x > 20) { System.out.println("A"); } else { System.out.println("B"); }
Output:
B
Because:
10 > 20 ↓ false ↓ else
Important:
With one if-else, only one branch executes.
- DOUBT: Can Both if and else Execute?
NO ❌
For:
if (condition) { // A } else { // B }
Java chooses exactly one:
condition ↙ ↘ true false ↓ ↓ A B
Never both.

Separate ifs
if (x > 10) { System.out.println("A"); }
if (x > 20) { System.out.println("B"); }
If:
x = 30;
Both are true.
Output:
A B
else-if
if (x > 10) { System.out.println("A"); } else if (x > 20) { System.out.println("B"); }
For:
x = 30;
Output:
A
Why?
Because the first condition is already true.
Golden rule:
Separate if → independent checks.
else-if → first true condition wins.
- DOUBT: Does Java Check Every else-if?
Consider:
if (x > 100) { System.out.println("A"); } else if (x > 50) { System.out.println("B"); } else if (x > 10) { System.out.println("C"); } else { System.out.println("D"); }
If:
x = 70;
Java checks:
70 > 100 → false ↓ 70 > 50 → true ↓ Print B ↓ STOP
It does not check the remaining else-if branches.

Example:
int marks = 95;
if (marks >= 90) { System.out.println("A"); } else if (marks >= 75) { System.out.println("B"); } else if (marks >= 60) { System.out.println("C"); }
The first condition:
95 >= 90
is true.
Therefore:
A
The remaining conditions aren't considered for that ladder.
- DOUBT: Does the Order of else-if Matter?
YES — VERY MUCH
Wrong:
if (marks >= 60) { System.out.println("C"); } else if (marks >= 90) { System.out.println("A"); }
For:
marks = 95
Output:
C
Why?
Because:
95 >= 60 → true
was encountered first.
Correct:
if (marks >= 90) { System.out.println("A"); } else if (marks >= 60) { System.out.println("C"); }
Output:
A
- DOUBT: Can else-if Exist Without else?
YES ✅
if (x > 100) { System.out.println("Large"); } else if (x > 50) { System.out.println("Medium"); }
If neither condition is true:
No output
The final else is optional.
- DOUBT: What Is Nested if?
An if inside another if.
if (age >= 18) {
if (citizen) {
System.out.println("Eligible");
}
}
Think:
First question: Are you 18+? ↓ YES Second question: Are you a citizen? ↓ YES Eligible
- DOUBT: Nested if vs else-if
They are completely different.
Nested if
if (condition1) {
if (condition2) {
}
}
Means:
If condition 1 is true, then check condition 2.
else-if
if (condition1) { } else if (condition2) { }
Means:
If condition 1 isn't true, check condition 2.
Memory:
Nested: IF A → THEN CHECK B
else-if: IF A → OTHERWISE CHECK B
- DOUBT: Can Nested if Be Replaced by &&?
Sometimes, yes.
This:
if (age >= 18) { if (citizen) { System.out.println("Eligible"); } }
can often become:
if (age >= 18 && citizen) { System.out.println("Eligible"); }
Because:
age >= 18 AND citizen
must both be true.
But nested if and logical operators are not universally interchangeable in every program because nesting can control when later checks execute and can contain different actions.
- DOUBT: What Is &&?
&& means AND.
if (age >= 18 && citizen) { System.out.println("Eligible"); }
Both must be true.
true && true = true true && false = false false && true = false false && false = false
Memory:
&& = BOTH
- DOUBT: What Is ||?
|| means OR.
if (day == 6 || day == 7) { System.out.println("Weekend"); }
At least one condition must be true.
true || true = true true || false = true false || true = true false || false = false
Memory:
|| = ANY ONE IS ENOUGH
- DOUBT: What Is !?
! means NOT.
boolean raining = false;
if (!raining) { System.out.println("Go outside"); }
Because:
raining = false
!false ↓ true
Therefore it executes.
- DOUBT: Why Can't I Write if (10)?
Because Java requires a boolean condition.
This is invalid:
int x = 10;
if (x) { }
Java does not automatically treat:
10 → true
Correct:
if (x > 0) { }
because:
x > 0 ↓ boolean
- DOUBT: Is = the Same as ==?
NO ❌

Assignment:
int x = 10;
Means:
Store 10 in x.
==
Comparison:
x == 10
Means:
Is x equal to 10?
So:
if (x == 10) { System.out.println("Ten"); }

switch is useful when you want to compare one expression against several fixed values.
int day = 2;
switch (day) {
case 1:
System.out.println("Monday");
break;
case 2:
System.out.println("Tuesday");
break;
case 3:
System.out.println("Wednesday");
break;
default:
System.out.println("Invalid");
}
Output:
Tuesday

case represents a possible matching value.
case 2:
means:
If the switch expression matches 2, execute this section.
- DOUBT: What Is default?
default is the fallback.
switch (day) {
case 1:
...
break;
case 2:
...
break;
default:
System.out.println("Invalid");
}
If:
day = 5
and there is no case 5:
default
executes.
- DOUBT: Is default Mandatory?
NO ❌
You can write:
switch (day) {
case 1:
System.out.println("Monday");
break;
case 2:
System.out.println("Tuesday");
break;
}
If nothing matches, Java simply leaves the switch.
- DOUBT: Is break Mandatory?
NO ❌
But this can cause fall-through.
Without break:
int x = 1;
switch (x) {
case 1:
System.out.println("One");
case 2:
System.out.println("Two");
}
Output:
One Two
- Why Does Fall-Through Happen?
Java finds:
case 1
and starts executing from there.
Without break, Java continues:
case 1 ↓ case 2 ↓ case 3 ↓ ...
until the switch ends or a control-flow statement exits it.

case 1: System.out.println("One"); break;
break says:
Stop executing the switch and come out.
Flow:
case 1 ↓ print ↓ break ↓ exit switch
- DOUBT: Can Fall-Through Be Intentional?
YES ✅
Example:
int day = 7;
switch (day) {
case 6:
case 7:
System.out.println("Weekend");
break;
default:
System.out.println("Weekday");
}
Both 6 and 7 should produce the same result.
So:
case 6 ↓ case 7 ↓ Weekend
This is intentional fall-through.
- DOUBT: if-else or switch?
Use if-else for:
ranges complex conditions multiple variables logical expressions
Example:
if (marks >= 75 && attendance >= 75) { }
Use switch for:
one value + multiple fixed choices
Example:
switch (choice) { case 1: case 2: case 3: }
- Can switch Check a Range?
Don't think of traditional case syntax as:
case marks >= 90:
That's not a normal case label.
For:
90–100 75–89 60–74
use an if-else ladder:
if (marks >= 90) { ... } else if (marks >= 75) { ... }

For a boolean decision:

Use if.

Suppose:
1 → Add 2 → Delete 3 → Update
This works:
if (choice == 1) { ... } else if (choice == 2) { ... } else if (choice == 3) { ... }
But switch is often clearer:
switch (choice) {
case 1:
...
break;
case 2:
...
break;
case 3:
...
break;
}
- DOUBT: Can I Put if Inside switch?
YES ✅
switch (choice) {
case 1:
if (age >= 18) {
System.out.println("Allowed");
}
break;
}
And the reverse is also possible:
if (age >= 18) {
switch (choice) {

break;

- DOUBT: What Happens to Variables After a Conditional?
Suppose:
if (true) { int x = 10; }
System.out.println(x);
❌ This does not compile.
Why?
x is declared inside the block and its scope ends at:
}
This is called block scope.
- DOUBT: What Is the if Block?
Everything between:
{
and:
}
is the block.
Example:
if (age >= 18) {
System.out.println("Adult");
System.out.println("Eligible");
}
Both statements belong to the if block.
- DOUBT: Are Braces Mandatory?
Technically, Java allows one statement without braces:
if (x > 10) System.out.println("Greater");
But for beginners and professional code, braces are strongly recommended:
if (x > 10) { System.out.println("Greater"); }
They make the structure much clearer and prevent many mistakes.
- The Dangerous Indentation Example
if (x > 10) System.out.println("A"); System.out.println("B");
Many beginners think both statements belong to if.
They don't.
Only the immediately following statement is controlled by the if when braces are omitted.
Equivalent meaning:
if (x > 10) { System.out.println("A"); }
System.out.println("B");
That's why braces are safer.
- DOUBT: Which if Does else Belong To?
Example:
if (a > 0) if (b > 0) System.out.println("A"); else System.out.println("B");
The else belongs to:
if (b > 0)
because Java associates an else with the nearest unmatched if.
To remove confusion:
if (a > 0) {

}

System.out.println("B");
}

Consider:
if (x != 0 && 10 / x > 2) { System.out.println("Valid"); }
If:
x = 0
Java evaluates:
x != 0 ↓ false
Since && needs both sides to be true, Java doesn't need to evaluate the second side.
Therefore:
10 / x
is not evaluated.
This is called:
Short-circuit evaluation
- && vs &
For beginner-level conditional logic, remember:
&& → logical AND with short-circuiting
while:
& → bitwise AND / also can act as non-short-circuit boolean AND
For ordinary conditions, use:
if (a > 0 && b > 0)
not:
if (a > 0 & b > 0)
when you specifically want logical short-circuit behavior.

Similarly:
|| → logical OR with short-circuiting | → bitwise OR / non-short-circuit boolean OR
For normal conditional expressions:
if (x == 1 || x == 2)
is the usual choice.

Answer:
A
Many students answer A B.
❌ Wrong.
The else-if is not independently executed after the if.
