Tolkien didn't set out to write a sweeping fantasy epic. *The Hobbit* started as a bedtime story he told his own children, and the famous opening line — "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." — was scribbled on the back of a blank exam paper he was grading at Oxford in the early 1930s.

+Tolkien later said he had no idea what a hobbit was when he wrote that sentence. He spent the next several years figuring it out, and the answer eventually grew into *The Lord of the Rings*.
