No-break space as thousand separator displayed as reversed slash in AsciiMath

In our guidelines we have written to use No-break space (U+00A0) for thousand separators in numbers. This is displayed as a reversed slash in AsciiMath in MathCAT. Should another Unicode character be used?

Seems like a bug in MathCAT to me. Why would it be a reverse slash?
