Gem rugged needs in my case to have libzstd-dev to compile extension

Maybe this info could be of interest.

My actual config is;

• Ruby version 3.2.7
• Ubuntu 24.10

Compilation failed at first. Log file showed that no zstd lib was found.
Main message stated "You need to install development tools".
So I have installed libzstd-dev and it now works.

May be someone with knowledge will know why and whether if this info should be added.

Indeed it looks like libgit2 now needs libzstd but not directly. It looks like newer openssl depends on it so it doesn't look so simple to say outright if you need it.

It looks like it comes in from openssl. We use pkg-config --static in order to figure out what we need to link to, but that seems to give us too much information, as we don't want to link to zstd, but we'll get there via openssl anyway. It looks like using pkg-config --libs --static --pure is the fix here.

Unfortunately it looks like libgit2 isn't completely right here and if we use that we miss out on linking against libssh2.

I've opened libgit2/libgit2#7215 which should help have a better list of dependencies for rugged to use.
