One rule, learned once, true everywhere:
Checking a thing checks the thing itself — everywhere it appears. A square checkbox completes the thing for good. A round checkbox logs this day of a repeating thing.
Tasks, goals, milestones. Check one — on Today, in a Life area, inside a parent goal, in a week list — and it is done in all of those places at once, struck through but still visible. Check again to undo. The same tap as the Mark complete button on the item's own page.
And it flows down and up:
- Completing a task that was the last open piece of a goal completes the goal too. You did the thing; the app does the filing.
- Completing a child updates the parent's percentage — a parent measured by its children moves the moment any of them does.
Habits and anything with a schedule. The circle means "done today": it feeds the streak and the heatmap, and tomorrow the circle returns empty, because the habit isn't finished — that's the point of a habit. Some repeats count more than once a day ("3 glasses of water") — the circle fills as a ring, 2 of 3.
Ending a habit forever is a deliberate act (Retire habit on its page), never a side effect of doing it today.
If one checkbox meant both "done forever" and "done today," you couldn't trust it — doing your pushups once would delete the pushups habit. The shape tells you what your tap will mean before you tap.
This is also why a thing can't simultaneously repeat and be marked "do today": the two give the checkbox different meanings, so setting one clears the other (a repeat reaches Today by itself anyway).
The two symbols below are the two checkbox shapes you'll see in the app itself: ☐ square (one-time — completing) and ◯ round (repeating — logging today).
| You check… | What happens |
|---|---|
| ☐ a one-time task on Today | Task done. If it was its goal's last open piece, the goal completes too |
| ☐ a goal in a Life list | Goal completes, everywhere. Tap again to reopen |
| ◯ a habit, anywhere | Today logged; streak +1; back tomorrow |
| ☐ a task with "+2 chapters" | Task done and the book meter moves by 2 |
| ◯ a habit you meant to end | Just logs today — use Retire habit on its page to end it |
