How can I upgrade?

I just installed latest 2.0.4 which should include an updater. I unfortunately cannot find any means how to invoke the updater. Do you enable an update button only when there is an update available? If yes, I'm not able to verify the update functionality now :-(

The check for updates is performed when the program starts.

Yes — the updater is intentionally only activated when a newer version is detected. In normal operation, the update option is only shown when an update is actually available.
Because of this, when you are already on the latest version (2.0.4), the updater will not show an active update path.

Please update your version to 2.0.4 again, as I made a change shortly after the initial release. I may also create a separate release for testing purposes.

Not sure I get your point: Should I update the old way or the new way? I just checked pibackup and there is no additional button available to update pibackup.
