hi,@52044. I reproduced the installation failure on Windows with Python 3.12.

When running:

python -m pip install -r requirements.txt

pip cannot find a compatible wheel for the pinned numpy==1.24.* dependency, downloads the numpy-1.24.4.tar.gz source distribution, and then fails during the build process with:

BackendUnavailable: Cannot import 'setuptools.build_meta'

The final traceback differs from the original report, likely because I am using a newer pip version, but the failure occurs at the same pinned NumPy dependency.

NumPy 1.24 supports Python 3.8 through 3.11, while Python 3.12 support was introduced in NumPy 1.26. The current README states Python >= 3.10, which may lead users to assume that Python 3.12 is supported.

To keep the change minimal and avoid upgrading dependencies without broader compatibility testing, I propose clarifying the README prerequisites:

• Recommend Python 3.10 or 3.11 for source installation
• Explicitly note that Python 3.12 is not currently supported by the pinned NumPy 1.24 dependency
• Retain Python 3.10 as the recommended Conda environment

I will submit a small documentation-only PR for this clarification.

I have submitted a documentation-only PR that clarifies the supported Python versions for source installation and explains the current Python 3.12 limitation.

The change intentionally does not upgrade NumPy or other dependencies because broader Python 3.12 compatibility has not yet been verified.
