[Bug] Cloud Shell requires azd version 1.18.0 for deployments

To Reproduce

Open Cloud Shell and check azd version

azd version

Attempt deployment with solution accelerators requiring azd >= 1.18.0

azd up

Observed Behavior

Deployment fails because the required minimum azd version (1.18.0) is not present.
Error messages indicate version incompatibility.

Expected behavior

Deployments using solution accelerators should succeed in Cloud Shell with azd version 1.18.0 or higher.

Is this specific to Cloud Shell?

Deployments succeed outside Cloud Shell with azd >= 1.18.0. This indicates the issue is specific to Cloud Shell image version.

Hi @Pavan-Microsoft, I verified that the next Cloud Shell image release will have azd version 1.19.0. It will roll out in ~3-4 weeks. Are there templates or workloads that are failing with azd 1.17 in Cloud Shell today?

Hi @mbifeld, yes—we tried deploying Conversation Knowledge Mining Solution Accelerator

As a workaround, we followed these steps to install azd v1.18.0 in Cloud Shell:

1. Open Cloud Shell

   In the Azure Portal, click the Cloud Shell icon (>_) in the top bar.
   Choose Bash if prompted.

2. Prepare installation directories

mkdir -p ~/azd ~/bin

• ~/azd will host the azd binaries.
• ~/bin will contain a symlink to your chosen azd version.

3. Install azd v1.18.0 locally

curl -fsSL https://aka.ms/install-azd.sh | bash -s -- --install-folder ~/azd --symlink-folder ~/bin --version 1.18.0

What this does:

• Downloads and executes the official installer script.
• Places the v1.18.0 binaries in ~/azd.
• Creates ~/bin/azd as a symlink to the new binary.

4. Ensure ~/bin is first in your PATH

Cloud Shell’s default profile prepends ~/bin to PATH. To verify:

echo $PATH | tr ':' ' ' | head -n 3

You should see ~/bin listed at or near the top. If not, add this to ~/.bashrc or ~/.profile:

echo 'export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc

Then reload:

source ~/.bashrc

5. Confirm the new azd version

azd version

Expected output sample:

Azure Developer CLI (azd) Version: 1.18.0 Commit: <commit-hash>

6. Retry your deployment

azd up

Deployments should proceed without the “minimum azd version” error.

7. (Optional) Revert to the built-in azd

If you ever need to go back to the Cloud Shell’s default azd:

rm ~/bin/azd
rm -rf ~/azd
